Hiring the choir during COVID-19: what you need to know

We’ve had a lot of people wondering if the choir is available for hire under the current restrictions required by the COVID-19 pandemic. Yes – we are! The government’s rules for England currently allow professional musicians and singers to undertake paid work, as long as appropriate safety measures are in place.

What are the current rules on live performance and recording? 

Even under the new ‘rule of six’, indoor and outdoor live performances by professional performers are still permitted under certain circumstances.  Studio recordings are permitted too, as long as safety measures are followed. 

We would not be at all surprised if these rules change in the coming weeks or months. We’ll do our best to update this article quickly if the situation changes. But for the very latest guidance, we suggest checking out the Musicians’ Union website

Our approach – safety and reassurance 

We take your safety extremely seriously. When you first contact us, we will discuss your needs and work with you on a plan which minimises risk towards everyone involved. We’ll keep in touch throughout the process; our choir manager is on hand to give advice and reassurance right from day one. We’re big believers in good communication and we want you to feel safe and comfortable. 

When it comes to safety measures, we follow government guidance. Here are our headline safety commitments: 

  • Our singers will be positioned (at least) two metres apart from each other and anyone else present.  

  • We will practice good hand hygiene by washing or sanitising our hands regularly throughout our time with you.

  • If any of our singers experience COVID-19 symptoms in the 14 days leading up to the event, and they either test positive for COVID-19 or cannot get a test, they will be replaced with a different performer.

  • Where possible, our singers will use private transport to travel to the booking. If two performers have to car share, the passenger will sit in the back and both people will wear a facemask throughout the journey. Where performers have to use public transport, they will wear facemasks and socially distance from others. Good hand hygiene will be practised by all when travelling to the booking. 

  • Sadly, we will have to avoid mingling socially with other people present (such as audience members) in order to minimise the risk of spreading the virus. 

  • Any equipment we bring with us (such as microphones or amplifiers) will be handled carefully and cleaned between bookings. Our equipment is not shared with any other performing groups.  

Cancellation/Postponement: our policy

These are unusual times.  Our usual policy for postponement or cancellation is 50% of fees within two months and 100% of fees within 48 hours.  However, since the pandemic began in March 2020 we have waived all our postponement fees and intend to continue doing so until the Covid crisis has passed.  In the rare event of outright cancellation during the pandemic, we reserve the right to apply our usual policy.
